22nd EGF symposium attracted participants from 24 countries

June 11–14, the 22nd Symposium of the European Grassland Federation (EGF), hosted by the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry in cooperation with the Lithuanian Grassland Society, was held in the National Martynas Mažvydas Library. And attracted participants from 24 countries. The event, which takes place in a different place every year, this year was organised in Lithuania. This year’s symposium coincided with the 700th anniversary of Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania. Event programme

The event was opened by Agnes Van Den Pol-Van Dasselaar, president of the European Herbalist Federation, Dr Gintaras Brazauskas, director of LAMMC, who gave greetings to the participants and Prof. Zenonas Dabkevičius, the Vice-President of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences.

The theme of the symposium “The Future Role of Ley-farming in Cropping Systems” remains important to promote sustainable plant production, to improve nutrient cycling in various cropping systems, and to broaden the range of production value chains in the circular bioeconomy. Leys in cropping systems comprise a significant component of agroecosystems as they provide multiple and diverse ecological services.

The scientific programme was divided into three plenary sessions:

  • Eco-efficiency of Leys in Farming Systems;
  • Biodiversity and other Ecosystem Services;
  • Multi-species Swards and Intercrops for Crop Rotations Benefits.

The collection of scientific reports of the continuous publication (vol. 28) “The Future Role of Ley-Farming in Cropping Systems” (eds. Ž. Kadžiulienė, K. Jaškūnė, E. Norkevičienė, M. Toleikienė, and L. Šarūnaitė) was published.

The main organizers of the EGF2023 symposium were LAMMC scientists: Dr Lina Šarūnaitė, Chair of the Organising Committee, and Dr Žydrė Kadžiulienė, Chair of the Scientific Committee.
